Bean Brigade!

Traveling the country, one sip at a time…

Pirate Bean

Our family had the best time exploring Roanoke Island, known for it’s “Lost Colony”.  We got to explore a real 18th century ship.  Watch reinactments and learn by hands on workshops exactly what life was like during the time period when white settlers first met and traded with the native americans.  Bean 1 even got to take home a nail made by the blacksmith!  We also learned to make cordage, thatch longhouses, and make primitive fish traps!

Of Course we’re never to busy to find the local coffee shop anywhere we visit.  Although this one wasn’t much to rave about.   Very small space and full of junk.  Worker was nowhere to be found the first 5 minutes we were standing in line.  But what they did have going for them was a full menu of very unique flavor options.  They also had a section in the back with checkers and chess.   Momma Bean had the Marshmallow Latte and Poppa Bean had the Mocha Mint.  Both were average drinks.  Dun, Dun, Dunnnnnnn!!!!!!! (Bean rating time)

Hurricane Bean

It’s not always easy convincing a toddler and a baby to hit up a coffee shop everyday and sometimes twice.  And that’s where good ol’e bribery comes in.  Introducing Bean 1’s “own coffee” as he calls it, the Chunky Monkey.

Front Porch Cafe…A local favorite!  It’s always a must stop every time we go to Nags Head, which is known for it’s Pirates and powerful hurricanes.  We love that their coffee is locally grown on the island by Kill Devil Hills Coffee to insure freshness and fair trade.  This coffee shop is unique because it also has a variety of wine and cheeses.  The walls are colorful and full of one of a kind art.  It’s a big open space with a lot of seating including one mini table for children.    It’s always a added bonus that they have soy and almond milk alternatives for no additional charge.  Another important quality our family looks for is special kids drinks.  They offer the chunky monkey which is made of chocolate milk, banana flavor, and topped with whipped cream.  It was one of Bean 1 all time favorites! Momma Bean had a Dublin Latte (Irish Cream w/ Mocha) and Poppa Bean had the advertised “Locals Favorite” the West 3rd (Mocha, Caramel, and Hazelnut).  Now….Lets get down to business!

A bit of history before you leave.  Nags Head got its name because Pirates would use Nags (donkeys) with lanterns around the neck to imitate lighthouses in the dark.   Ships would believe this trick and run a ground on the beach.  Thus, allowing the pirates to climb aboard and steal the booty!

Beach Bean! The adventure begins…

One morning while Poppa Bean was sleeping in Momma Bean decided it was time for a trip to the beach.  Before Poppa Bean could even get out of bed, the bags were packed and ready to go.  We grabbed our two sweet boys and strapped them in their carseats for our first coffee fueled adventure!  Bean 1 (3 years) could hardly contain himself, he wanted to bring home every seashell in sight.  Bean 2 (1 year) thought the best way to enjoy the beach was to taste every grain of sand.  It was a mess! Of course how we start each new day is with a stop to the local coffee shop!

Morning View Coffee

Morning View Coffee was hands down one of the best coffee shop experiences ever . The coffee shop art and drink names matched their hometown themes. They had painted Surf and Skateboards on the wall, a grass tiki hut for their coffee bar, with comfy couches to lounge around in. This place was perfect. They had their own cool t-shirt design which came in multiple cuts and bright colors. They even had extremely fast service.  There was only one employee, but she knocked out a whole line in minutes.  Momma Bean had the iced mocha latte with tiramisu, and Poppa Bean had the Morning View original the Nor’easter.  It consists of mocha, hazelnut, vanilla, with chocolate whip.  I must say it was a unique name that fit the beach scene perfectly with a great flavor.  Now….for the rating!
